Charles W. Whitten was born in 1871 on a farm near Castleton in Stark County. In 1888 he began teaching in a one-room school in Marshall County, later taking a two-year diploma at Illinois State Normal University. Whitten served on the faculty at the Normal School until 1903 when he entered the University of Illinois. There he completed work for a bachelor's degree while teaching in the old Academy of the University.
