Scope and Contents
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Charles W. Whitten was born in 1871 on a farm near Castleton in Stark County. In 1888 he began teaching in a one-room school in Marshall County, later taking a two-year diploma at Illinois State Normal University. Whitten served on the faculty at the Normal School until 1903 when he entered the University of Illinois. There he completed work for a bachelor's degree while teaching in the old Academy of the University. From 1906 to 1922 Whitten held the following positions: Assistant Professor in Science and Professor of Physics and Chemistry, Northern Illinois State Normal School; Principal, DeKalb Township High School; Manager, Illinois High School Athletic Association; Secretary-Treasurer, National Federation of State High Schools Athletic Association. After 1922 Whitten continued to hold an administrative post on the board of the Illinois High School Athletic Association until his death in 1957.
