Efforts to organize a Supportive Professional Staff Council began in 1977, gaining official approval of the University Council in 1979. The employment classification of SPS has grown rapidly since that time, and is now nearly the size of the tenured faculty in numbers. Records in this collection include constitutions and by-laws, meeting minutes, correspondence, membership lists, and award recipients. The Supportive Professional Staff Council began distributing a newsletter in 1982.

This collection documents the interests and activities of the Supportive Professional Staff Council which represents the Supportive Professional Staff on the Northern Illinois University campuses. Records include constitutions and by-laws, agendas and meeting minutes, lists of council members, award winners, and correspondence.
