Biographical or Historical Information

Efforts to organize a Supportive Professional Staff Council were initiated by Donald R. Buckner of Student Housing Services (Supportive Professional Staff representative to the University Council, Fall 1977 - Spring 1980), and Robert Fischer of Founders Memorial Library (Supportive Professional Staff representative to the Faculty Assembly). Buckner and Fischer, in addition to gaining University Council approval for the Supportive Professional Staff Council, gathered together a number of Supportive Professional Staff members to assist in drafting a constitution and by-laws. The first of these draft documents were ready by July 3, 1979. The revised constitution and by-laws were ratified by the Supportive Professional Staff in the Fall of 1980. Elections were then held for representatives, and the Supportive Professional Staff Council held its first meeting on December 8, 1980. The Supportive Professional Staff Council meets monthly during the academic year. It has been effective agency in gaining SPS representation on a number of important University committees, and has also provided for increased communication with other areas of the University as well as improving communication among the Supportive Professional Staff.
