Biographical or Historical Information

On December 4, 1973 the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved the organization of the College of Professional Studies at NIU.  The university proposed the organization to more adequately house existing departments and contribute to the future program development of the departments involved.  The proposed college included the schools of Allied Health and Nursing, and the departments of Home Economics, Industry and Technology, Library Science, and Communicative Disorders.  The individual departments formed at varying times throughout the university's history.  On July 1, 1995 the College of Professional Studies changed its name to the Health and Human Sciences College. The School of Allied Health Professions organized in 1973 to combine the Community Mental Health Program from the Educational Administration and Services Department, the Medical Technology Program from the Department of Biological Sciences, and the Physical Therapy Program from the Department of Women's Physical Education. As early as 1937, the English Department offered courses in communication disorders.  In 1971 a Division of Speech Pathology and Audiology formed and this was reorganized in 1974 into the Department of Communicative Disorders. The oldest departments in the College of Professional Studies, Home Economics and Industry and Technology, offered courses as early as 1904-1905.  Foods and sewing were first offered as Domestic Science in 1905 and became Household Science from 1915 to 1921.  The term Home Economics came into use in 1920 and the department was established under that name in 1921.  The department changed names in 1985 to become the Department of Human and Family Resources, and in June 1996 this became the School of Family, Consumer, and Nutritional Sciences. Industry and Technology, called Manual Arts from 1910-1917 and Industrial Arts until 1963, formally became a department in 1921.  In 1986 the department became part of the newly established College of Engineering. The Library Science program was established in 1952 under the University Library and became an independent department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1959. It was reassigned to the newly established College of Professional Studies in 1974.  In March of 1992 the Library and Information Studies Program (formerly Library Science) began a two-year phase-out due to lack of funds to maintain ALA accreditation. During 1959 a nursing program began and the Department of Nursing Education was formed in the College of Education.  The Department of Nursing changed its status to become the School of Nursing in 1965.  In 1974 the School of Nursing was transferred to the College of Professional Studies. The Gerontology Program was established in 1986 as a Special Program.  It became affiliated with the College of Professional Studies in 1993.  Gerontology is an interdisciplinary program that fosters educational, research, and service activities pertinent to ageing.
