Law College
Scope and Contents
The College of Law records dates from 1949 to 1997 and consists of three series: Maryknoll Seminary, Lewis University, and NIU College of Law. Series I and II contain information on the Maryknoll Seminary and Lewis University. Maryknoll Seminary provided the building the College of Law was housed in while Lewis University founded the college. The College of Law series is divided into eight subseries: History, Merger, Remodeling; Accreditation Files; Correspondence; Policies, Procedures and Manuals; Faculty Publications and Course Work; Student Government/Student Bar Association; Publications; Photographs; and Law Library. The researcher should note that further documentation regarding the College of Law can be found in William Monat’s papers located in the President’s Office Records (UA 4), and in the David Shapiro Papers (RC 174) in the Regional Collections. Records documenting the transfer to NIU are also located in the IBHE Records (UA 2) and the Board of Trustees Records (UA3).

Biographical or Historical Information
The Lewis University College of Law opened in February 1974 on the former Maryknoll Seminary campus in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. The college was provisionally approved by the American Bar Association in 1978. Financial difficulties caused the Board of Trustees of Lewis University and the NIU Board of Regents to agree in 1979 to transfer the college from Lewis to NIU. In the summer of 1979 the General Assembly of Illinois approved the transfer and Governor Thompson signed the bill which accomplished the transition of the college to NIU. In July of 1982 the College of Law moved to Swen Parson Hall on NIU’s main university campus. In August of 1982 the American Bar Association granted full approval to the college one year earlier than had been anticipated. The Association of American Law Schools granted membership in 1985.
