Biographical or Historical Information
The position of Ombudsman was created in 1969 to handle complaints and grievances of faculty, staff, and students. Michael McDermott started work as the first NIU Ombudsman on September 10, 1969 and served until 1971. He was followed by Don Snow, 1971-1975; David L. Knowlton, 1975-1977; Don Snow, Acting Ombudsman, 1977; Leon M. Miller, 1978-1983; Patricia M. Lambert, Acting Ombuds Officer 1983-1985, and Ombudsman, 1985-1986; Arnold B. Fox, Interim Ombudsman, April 1, 1986-1987; Bertrand J. Simpson, Jr., 1987-1990; Stacey E. Dolby, Jr., Interim Ombudsman, 1990-1991, and Tim Griffin who began his tenure in 1991 and as of 2010 was still Ombudsman.
