Biographical or Historical Information

The class of 1900, fifteen graduates, organized the Alumni Association shortly after the commencement ceremony. One of the group's first projects was to enlist support for an athletic coach (1902). In February, 1907, the Association adopted its first constitution and became a permanent organization. The Association established the first memorial fund for Professor Fred L. Charles in 1913 and the first Student Loan Fund in 1916. The first alumnae club or chapter organized in 1920 and in 1924 the Association joined the Federation of Alumni Associations of the Illinois State Teachers Colleges, later called the Joint Alumni Council. Growth in services and the number of alumnae brought about the approval of a permanent part-time secretary in 1937 as well as office space. At the same time the Alumni Association assisted in the establishment of the first extension course in Rockford. In 1962 the Association hired a full-time Executive Secretary, later the Director of Alumni Relations, and acquired office space in the new University Center. In 1965 they added an Assistant Director for Development to the staff. More recent projects included sponsoring vacation tours.
