Biographical or Historical Information
In 1995, the city planned to remove all of the existing cutstone (limestone-block) curbing on South Second Street and replace that with standard extruded-concrete curb and gutter. In addition, bricks would be removed for a distance of approximately 3 to 4 feet out from the curb edge, the subbase filled in and raised, and the bricks replaced. The members of the Huntley Park Neighborhood Association living on South Second Street requested the city consider alternative plans to preserve the character of the brick streets in keeping with historic preservation guide-lines of the neighborhood. Coordinating efforts between the City staff and the Association ended in a compromise that retained the original curbing.
