Scope and Contents

The records in this collection document attendance records and patterns, curriculum, and reunions for Mayfield Center School, District 41. An address book lists the names and addresses of former Mayfield teachers and pupils, as well as holds the minutes of the first three reunions-1961, 1963, 1981. A scrapbook holds the mailing list, correspondence, minutes and register, and reunion photographs for 1963, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1990. Photographs from Mayfield Center School, Alms School, and Vandeburg School show students and scenes from the area. Of special interest is the attendance record dated May 8, 1882 to August 4, 1884, from Milan Township School District 8 which consists of summer school, as well as regular session records.

Biographical or Historical Information

Mayfield Center School District 41 was located in Section 21, in the center of Mayfield Township. School District 8 was located in Section 3 of Milan Township. These were both rural schools. In 1961, the remaining pupils and teachers began getting together for reunions. The first one was held on September 10, 1961, at the Mayfield Grange Hall. After a break of 18 years, the third reunion was held September 20, 1981, at the Russell Forest Preserve, where each succeeding reunion was held at three-year intervals. At the sixth reunion, held August 19, 1990, it was decided that, because of rising costs and declining attendance, no more reunions of the Mayfield Center School would be held.
