Scope and Contents

The Jennifer Stevenson papers contain printed and handwritten (paper-based) materials that are split into series based upon format.  Series I consists of manuscript critiques, a questionnarie by Del Ray Books, and a synopsis of her novel, The Hinky Bearskin Rug.  Series II contains notes pertaining to story development, chapter summaries, background research, newspaper clippings, index cards, and collages created to help in the writing process of her novels.  Series III is Digital Media and it currently houses a USB drive with files containing transcripts of conversations with Stevenson's editor and manager, revision and copyediting letters, process notes, images, and research. The author's electronic hardcopy files will be kept on the department's main computer drive in the author's SFWA finding aid folder (titled under their name and identification number).

Biographical or Historical Information

Jennifer Stevenson was born on Oct 6, 1955 in Waukegan, Illinois and she grew up around nature in St. Charles, Illinois.  She graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor's degree in English and Music.  She later earned two Master's degrees in General Counseling and Structural Family Theory from the University of Southern Connecticut. She is well known for her Hinky Chicago novel series, which contains The Hinky Brass Bed, The Hinky Velvet Chair, The Hinky Bearskin Rug, The Hinky Genie, and Hinky Taste of You.  Her other novels include the Slacker Demons series and the Backstage Boys series.  Her story, Solstice (1998) and her book (2005/2006), Trash Sex Magic, were both nominated for a Nebula Award.  Jennifer writes novels, short stories, and nonfiction, all of which have either been published in magazines or presented at conferences. Aside from being a writer, Jennifer runs a company with her husband called Hawkeye Scenic Studios, which is a scenery construction company.  She is also an avid bird watcher and loves to feed crows.  Jennifer Stevenson currently lives in Chicago, Illinois.
