Scope and Contents

The Emma Bull Papers consist of printed (paper-based) manuscripts of novel collections, short stories, non-fiction articles, essays and miscellaneous materials from personal notes and interviews.  The collection is divided into series based upon format. Series I consists of Novels; Series II includes Short Stories; Series III contains Scripted Works, Series IV is Correspondence, Series V is newspapers, Series VI contains articles, Series VII consists of pictures and art, and Series VIII is made up of miscellaneous documents.  The majority of the materials are organized by date on work and original date of publication. Property Rights are transferred to the University Libraries per the signed Deed of Gift Document. Literary Rights are retained by the content creator.  Any copyrights so stated in the materials remain in force.

Biographical or Historical Information

Emma Bull was born on December 13, 1954.  She attended high school in Ohio, where she was the editor of the school paper, The Indian.  She later attended Beloit College and graduated in 1976.  It was during her time at Beloit that she would meet her future husband, Will Shetterly.  After graduating college she moved to Minneapolis, where she was a member of the band Cats Laughing and a member of the Scribblies.  The Scribblies were a group of Minneapolis writers who practically without exception all became fantasy or science fiction authors of various levels of renown.  After living in Minneapolis, she and her husband moved first to southern California and then after that to Bisbee.  She currently lives in Tucson Arizona.  During this time she was also in a musical duo, the Flash Girls.
