Biographical or Historical Information

Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University and from most recent counts has over 880 active chapters within the United States as well as internationally. The primary goals of Sigma Tau Delta are to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in academia, to provide cultural stimulation and promote interest in English language and literature, to foster literacy, and to foster the discipline of English language, literature and writing. In 1982, Sigma Tau Delta went through a reorganization process through which the Central Office was moved to Northern Illinois University. Also in 1982, Dr. William Johnson was appointed Executive Secretary (later renamed Executive Director). Dr. Johnson is the third person to hold this position in Sigma Tau Delta. Sigma Tau Delta leadership also had a hand in establishing the National English Honor Society for High Schools and the Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges. Additionally, Sigma Tau Delta has been a certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies since 1972.
