Biographical or Historical Information

On March 2, 1937, a charter was granted to Auxiliary #280 of the Carpenters and Joiners Local 792. The Auxiliary had 14 charter members. The objectives of the organization was "to stand behind their men in troubled items as well as good, buy union made items, hire union help, and promote the knowledge of unionism at all times." The Auxiliary women formed committees which helped to enforce union backed laws and projects, aided the charities, educated people to the ways and means of the union label, and encouraged the hiring of union people. They assisted the local in social gatherings, with convention programming, and entertaining of the delegates and their wives. By the beginning of the 1970's the Auxiliary was making plans to disband. The age and health of the members as well as the need for many of the women to work, left the 8 remaining active members responsible for organizing all the activities. The inability to do so, brought forth the resignation of the officers and the disbanding of the Auxiliary.
