University Health Services

Health services were first provided in 1912 when a school nurse was hired. A second nurse was hired when Williston Hall, the women’s dormitory, opened in 1915. However, it wasn’t until 1930 that a continuous Health Service was established. A Director of Health Service and College Nurse was appointed in 1930 and given charge of conducting the required Freshmen physical examinations. In 1936 a physician was hired and a second nurse was added to the staff. A nurse or physician coordinated the Health Services until 1949, at which time a Director of Student Health was appointed to handle the Service’s administrative matters. In 1953 the Health Service became part of Student Personnel Services and in 1967 it became known as the University Health Service. When Student Personnel Services was reorganized in 1972, the University Health Service became part of the Student Affairs Division.
