This record group contains personal and administrative papers of the university's presidents, with the exception of J. Clifton Brown (1927-1929). It also includes copies of the university's constitution and by-laws, development plans, and the President's "Report to the (Governing) Board." The "President's Reports" date from 1932 to the present and are added regularly to the collection, as are office subject files as they become inactive.

Abstract
The University Archives acquired the Presidents' papers in numerous installments beginning in the mid-1960's. With the exception of files relating to legal counsel and personnel matters, there are no restrictions on access to the records through the Monat administration. Researchers must secure permission to publish any of the materials in these records from the NIU Legal Counsel Office.
