The Regional Collections include original manuscripts and records generated by private individuals, institutions, and organizations from throughout the eighteen northern Illinois counties. The collections span the period from 1800 to the present and focus on several major themes in the region's history: agriculture, politics, ethnic heritage, commerce and industry, the role of women, and urban expansion. To provide documentation in these areas of interest the Center actively collects the historical records of farmers and their organizations, businesses and retail stores, state and local politicians, churches, cemeteries, civic agencies, individuals, women's organizations, and labor unions. In addition, the Center holds vertical file manuscripts, county and local histories, atlases and plat books, city directories, maps, broadsides, posters, photographs, oral histories, genealogical journals, and core reference printed materials on the history of northern Illinois that complement the manuscript collections.

DeKalb County Building and Construction Trades Council Records

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the records of the DeKalb County Building and Construction Trades Council from 1950 to 2001. The records include administrative files, minutes, correspondence, printed materials, legal documentation, and audio-visual materials. The records reflect the organization’s activities as a labor union. The correspondence includes letters from individuals, labor organizations, private companies, and public organisms. The minutes have many gaps, especially before 1980.

Jane Heckman Papers

John K. Morris Papers (Chadwick)

Joyce Holmberg Papers

Scope and Contents

The Joyce Holmberg Papers date from 1982 to 2002. The records include documents, news articles, copies of Senate bills, and photographs.  Of special interest are the information on the legislation sponsored by Holmberg  and her radio commentaries for WNIU, a radio station at Northern Illinois University.

Lipscomb Collection : 1968 Democratic National Convention (Chicago)

Abstract

H. Alan Lipscomb became a Field Representative for the Northern Illinois University Swen Parson Library in August of 1968.  He collected research material pertaining to the Democratic National Convention of 1968 and acquired the passes and credentials which gave him access to all convention activities.

Peg Breslin Papers (Ottawa)

The records of the Peg Breslin Papers include information from 1976 to 1992+.  The records include speech notes, legislation records, court documents, materials on child care, correspondence, campaign records, materials on the Democratic Party’s State Central Committee, Photographs, and videos.  The campaign records include Breslin’s run for State Treasurer in 1990 and her election to Appellate Judge in 1992.

Ray "Dutch" Scott Papers (DeKalb)

Scope and Contents

The materials in the collection partially document Ray A. “Dutch” Scott’s 1974 campaign for Illinois State Senator. Included are correspondence, position papers, and projects describing Scott’s Democratic platform and his involvement in local community services prior to the 1974 campaign.  Also included are state and local legislative publications, reports, and memorandums dating 1967 to 1976.
