Joan M. Metzger

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Joan Marie Metzger, the daughter of Lorraine and Robert Descourouez, was born and raised in St. Charles, Illinois.  She graduated from Mundelein College [Chicago] in 1972 with a B.A. in History.  In 1973 she married Allan Metzger, and they moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1978 where Joan began working in the research library of the Arizona Historical Society.  Following their return to Illinois in the fall of 1987, Joan decided to pursue a Master of Library Science degree at Northern Illinois University.  She began attending classes in the fall of 1988 and graduated in May of 1991.  Joan became the Assistant University Archivist in the Regional History Center at NIU in September 1995. The materials included here are from the courses Metzger took for her MLS degree, and include course syllabi and requirements, class notes, assignments, and some exams.  Researchers should also see VFM 4.96 - “The Littlest Carnegie: A History of the Clinton Township Public Library, Waterman, Illinois,” written for LIBS 571 in the spring of 1991, and VFM 4.94 - “The Finnish Community of DeKalb, Illinois,” written for HIST 492 in the spring of 1990.  The Library and Information Science program at NIU was phased out in 1993.
