BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Carol Becker from Monee, Illinois, was born October 16, 1934. She received her bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois University in 1956 and her master’s degree at Hunter College, New York, NY in 1957. Becker taught in Blue Lake, Illinois in 1957-1958 before joining the staff of the Department for the Visually Handicapped at Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson, Arizona as a math teacher in the fall of 1958. She received her certification for teaching the visually handicapped by attending San Francisco State University and the University of Arizona. Becker’s contributions to the education of the visually handicapped in their use of the Nemeth Code and the abacus have been felt throughout the country. She established an Abacus Club at ASDB in which the children gained skills that enabled them to compete mathematically with their sighted peers in public schools. She published several articles describing methods of teaching children abacus skills and preparing teachers to teach these skills. She contributed further to teacher preparation as an instructor of braille at the University of Arizona for several years. Becker passed away June 3, 1983 in Tucson, Arizona.
