Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The records in the Student Association collection partially document the evolution of student government at N.I.U. from 1955 to the present.  These materials have been arranged into four Series: (I) Student Senate Records (1955-1964); (II) Student Association Board Records (1964-1969); (III) Student Association Records (1958-2007); and (IV) Campus Activity Board Records (1963-2010).  Although Series III, the Student Association, provides the most complete documentation on student politics and government at N.I.U., there are important files in Series I and II that provide insights into the increasingly active role of students in the areas of self-governance and student rights. Series III also contains three sub-series that document the Student Association’s Committees, Subject Files, and various Student Organizations.  Series IV documents the various activities and performers sponsored by the Campus Activity Board (CAB), and also contains some meeting minutes of this organization.  Addenda continue to be added to the collection.  These addendum include the sub-series of committees, subject files, and student organizations. Researchers should also refer to other related collections in the University Archives including: Student Activities [UA 35], Sorority [UA 40] and Fraternity Records [UA 41], Student Publications [UA 36], Student Housing Records [UA42], and Student Papers [UA 38].  The Northern Star should also be consulted for the numerous articles it contains relating to the Student Association and CAB events.
