Scope and Contents
INTRODUCTION The Martin I. Kallich Papers were donated to the University Archives in several installments by Martin Kallich and his wife Harriet Kallich. Literary rights in all materials not under copyright are dedicated to the public. There are no restrictions on access to the collection. SCOPE AND CONTENT The papers in this collection document the life and career of Martin Kallich from 1921 to 1999. The collection is organized into three series: Personal Correspondence, Research and Publications, and Classroom and Teaching. The first folder in the collection contains biographical material on Martin Kallich. The next three folders contain information relating to his wife, mother and father. Series one, Personal Correspondence, contains correspondence with colleagues as well as family and friends. The materials in the second series, Research and Publications, include Kallich’s thesis (completed in 1945), copies of published letters, book reviews, and articles, as well as typescripts of other research projects. The NEH Grant Proposal and reports relating to his research for “British Poetry and the American Revolution: A Bibliographic Survey...1755-1800,” which he completed in 1983, are also found here. In addition, there are a number of short stories written by Kallich in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's, six personal notebooks dating from 1935 to 1946, and information relating to his interest in graphic art. The final series, Classroom and Teaching, encompasses over half of the material in the collection, and contains material used by Kallich in the teaching of his various English classes. Included here are samples of midterm and final exams, lecture notes, items of interest for his classes, and many student papers. Researchers may wish to consult the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Collection (UA 25) for additional information relating to Kallich’s activities in the English Department.
