Scope and Contents
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Francis Stroup, the son of Mina Gist and Sidney Stroup, was born September 8, 1909 in Holliday, Texas. He received his BA from North Texas State Teachers College in 1929, where he also played two years on the varsity basketball team. In 1936 he received his MS in Education, and in 1954 received a Doctorate in Education, both from the University of Southern California. Stroup taught in Texas public schools from 1929 through 1942, and taught summers at North Texas State College from 1939 until 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force in late 1942, and served for three and a half years. After leaving the Air Force, Stroup spent four years as teacher of physical education and swimming coach at the University of Wyoming. In 1950 he became Head of the Department of Physical Education at Southern State College in Magnolia, Arkansas. In 1959 Dr. Stroup came to Northern Illinois University as Professor of Physical Education and Director of the Graduate Program. He also became the newly established swimming program’s first coach. In 1961 he wrote the words to the “Huskie Fight Song.” Since his retirement from NIU in 1974 Stroup has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at both NIU and North Texas. Dr. Stroup and his wife Marjory are the parents of three sons, Stanley, Stewart and Stinson, and resided in DeKalb until their deaths. Francis Stroup died in December 2010.
