Milo Whittaker

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Born on February 17, 1879, Milo Whittaker later attended College Springs Academy (1910) and graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Denver.  In 1917 he received his M.A. degree from the same institution.  After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in 1933, Dr. Whittaker devoted much of his time to the Methodist ministry.  He entered the teaching profession and served as teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools of Pueblo, Cannon City, and Del Norte, Colorado.  In 1920 he came to DeKalb as principal of McMurry Training School.  After a year in this position Whittaker joined the faculty of the social sciences at the Northern Illinois Teachers College.  When Edward C. Page died in December, 1929, Whittaker became the head of the department and served in that capacity until his death on February 14, 1942. A recognized citizen and educator, Dr. Whittaker contributed both to the university and the community.  He was largely responsible for organizing the faculty council to advise and assist the president in the administration of the college.  He was a member of numerous professional organizations.  Among these were the National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, Society for the Study of Education, American Sociological Association, and the Social Science Research Council.  He also served as the first president for the local Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. During his career many of his articles were published.  His most notable work was the textbook for classes in community civics published in 1938 under the title, Experience in Citizenship.
