SCOPE AND CONTENT The collection documents the activities of Professor John R. Hainds as a scholar and author from 1935 to 1952.  Records include correspondence, teaching materials, and class notes. A major portion of the collection contains materials relating to the publication of Bibliography of the Published Writings of John Stuart Mill by J. R. Hainds, Ney MacMinn, and James McNab McCrimmon (1945).  Items include drafts, typed transcriptions and card files on Mill’s published works. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH J. Robert Hainds was born September 10, 1896 in Brookfield, Missouri.  He completed the Ph. B. (1925) at Shurtleff College and the M.A. (1933) and Ph.D. (1939) degrees at Northwestern University.  In 1940 Hainds came to Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College from Northwestern University where he had been a faculty member in the Department of English. Prior to his appointments at Northwestern and Northern Illinois, Hainds held the following positions: Head of the Department of English and Speech at Gladstone Michigan High School (1925-1927); Instructor at the Senior High School, Davenport, Iowa (1927-1930), Sterling Morton High School, Cicero, Illinois (1930-1933), and Morton Junior College, Cicero, Illinois (1933-1937). During his twenty-six years at Northern, J. Robert Hainds established a brilliant record both in teaching and administration.  Serving as a teacher, graduate school dean, and academic vice president, he played an important role in the development of Northern from a single purpose teachers college to a complex university.  Dr. Hainds was co-author of Bibliography of the Published Writings of John Stuart Mill and author of J.S. Mill and St. Simonians and J. S. Mill’s Examiner Articles.  He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Tau Delta, Alpha Delta, and Phi Delta Kappa, and listed in the Directory of American Scholars (3rd Edition), Who’s Who in Education, Who’s Who in Midwest, Who’s Who in America. In 1962 J. R. Hainds retired from Northern Illinois University as a Professor Emeritus. Professor Hainds died September 13, 1974.
