Scope and Contents

SCOPE AND CONTENT The two scrapbooks in this collection were compiled by Annette Lefkowitz, and were donated by Helen Sherbenau, in 1987.  The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, photographs, and press releases relating to Northern Illinois University’s School of Nursing.  Included is information on nursing programs, faculty, students, alumni, grants, awards, invitations and programs.  Also found here is information on the dedication of Montgomery Hall on October 16, 1970, including the dedication program, speeches, and letters of congratulations. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Annette Lefkowitz was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.  She received her R.N. at Cornell Medical Center; B.A., Pennsylvania State University; and M.A., N. Ed. Administration, Guidance, as well as an Ed.D. from Columbia University, in 1958.  Lefkowitz came to Northern in 1958 and became the first director of the Nursing School in 1959.  Among her many accomplishments over the years were: chair of the Committee of Nurse Examiners, charter member of the American Association of Deans and Directors of College and University Schools of Nursing, member of National Advisory Committee on Nursing and Nursing Education, American Association of University Women, National League for Nursing, American Nurses Association, the Illinois Heart Association, DeKalb County Association for Retarded Children, Pi Lambda Theta, Kappa Delta Pi, coordinator of Malayan and Thailand Peace Corps groups, and co-editor of Problems of the Aged. Dr. Lefkowitz retired from the School of Nursing in May 1985, and moved to Ft. Myers, Florida.
