Scope and Contents
SCOPE AND CONTENT With the exception of correspondence belonging to Eula M. Jandell (1947), most of the records in this collection document the personal and professional interests of Josephine M. Jandell, a librarian and faculty member of Northern Illinois State Normal School from 1901 to 1945. Materials include correspondence, concert programs, teaching manuals, travel guides, photographs, and publications. Researchers should note that a major portion of the collection consists of publications. Of these the following are most important: Christmas Stories, (1875), Harper's Bazaar "Studies of Great Women" (1901), The War Cartoons of Louis Roemaker (1917), Mastery of Speech (1918), Poor Richard's Almanac (1922), The Significance of Sinclair Lewis (1922), Must It Always Be War? (1943). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Josephine M. Jandell was born September 10, 1858 in Marshall, Michigan and came to Northern Illinois State Normal School as assistant librarian in 1901. Within a few years Jandell was promoted to head librarian, a position she held until her retirement in 1923. During her librarianship, Jandell was active in extending the influences of the library through lectures and book reviews as well as sponsoring literary clubs and societies. By 1921, Miss Jandell was selected the first Alumni Registrar to handle the growing number of records and business transactions. Even after her retirement, Josephine Jandell continued to serve on the Executive Committee for the Alumni Association on campus until 1939. In 1939, the Association honored Jandell's completion of thirty-eight years of service to the college when they established a $2500 scholarship in her name. Josephine Jandell died on November 25, 1946.
