SCOPE AND CONTENT The records in this collection document the professional activities and association of Dr. Howard W. Gould from 1926 to 1965. Materials include correspondence, conference and colloquium programs, newsletters, blueprints, publications, and one photograph. Also included are minutes, annual reports, and programs (1946-1965) from the Illinois State Academy of Science. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Howard Woodham Gould (1896-1984) received a Bachelor of Science degree at McKendree College in 1918. Continuing his education he earned his M.S. degree at the University of Illinois (1922) and Ph.D. at the University of Iowa (1929). Gould joined the Northern faculty in 1927 and later became head of the department of physical sciences which included physics, chemistry, and geology. He served as department head until 1961 when separate departments for chemistry and physics were created. After completing thirty-seven years of service to Northern Illinois University, Gould retired in 1964. He died on January 16, 1984. Dr. Gould was a member of the Illinois Academy of Science, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and the U.S. Chess Federation.
