Scope and Contents
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Born in 1900, George (Chick) Evans later received his B.A. degree from Des Moines University, Iowa and his M.A. degree from Columbia University. In 1929, after five years of successful coaching at the high school level in Illinois and Iowa, Evans came to Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College as head football coach and athletic director. Under his direction, Evans brought in additional staff members and established one of the largest intramural athletic programs in the Midwest. He also directed the construction of the Northern Fieldhouse (named George G. “Chick” Evans Fieldhouse in 1974), the football stadium, the west campus athletic area with grasstex track and tennis courts, and two baseball fields. After his retirement in 1968, Evans lived in San Diego, California until his death on November 23, 1976.
