SCOPE AND CONTENT The papers of Paul S. Burtness partially document his participation on the Faculty Advisory Committee for the Board of Higher Education and on the Ad Hoc Governing Policy Committee for the Board of Regents. The records consist of correspondence and reports concerning the Illinois Board of Higher Education (1963-1966), and several policy drafts and revisions submitted to the Illinois Board of Regents (1967-1968). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Paul S. Burtness, born in 1923, earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at the State University of Chattanooga. Burtness went on to achieve his M.A. (1947) and Ph.D. (1953) in English from the University of Chicago. In 1953, Professor Burtness joined the Northern Illinois University English Department and held the following positions: Assistant Professor (1953-1957); Associate Professor (1957-1962); Professor (1962-1979). Aside from teaching Professor Burtness served on several boards and councils concerned with program development and the day-to-day operations of the University. He was a member of the Presidents' Faculty Advisory Council (forerunner of the University Council), the Faculty Advisory Committee to the Board of Higher Education, Chairman of the Constitution Committee, and participated in the faculty committee to help draft the governing policies of the Board of Regents. In 1970, Burtness became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, a position he held until 1979.
