Scope and Contents
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Northern's ninth president, Clyde J. Wingfield, was born March 13, 1931 in Arkansas. Wingfield earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in political science from East Texas State University. He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Syracuse University in New York. Wingfield worked as an assistant professor of Political Science at Texas Technological College (1956-1959) and as an assistant professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Pennsylvania State University (1959-1962). He served as director of the public administration graduate program at Northern Illinois University from 1962 to 1964. Wingfield was employed in a variety of administrative positions ever the next 20 years: professor and department head, Political Science, University of Texas at El Paso (1964-1967); executive vice-president, University of Texas at El Paso (1967-1969); director, graduate program in public administration, Southern Methodist University (1969-1971); president, Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York (1971-1976); executive vice-president for academic affairs and provost, University of Miami, Coral Gables (1976-1982); and president, State University of New York, College at Old Westbury (1982-1985). Wingfield was named President of Northern Illinois University effective July 1985. Clyde Wingfield resigned from the Presidency in May 1986. He then served on the faculty of the Political Science Department at Northern Illinois University until his retirement in 1993. Wingfield died at his home in Dallas, Texas on September 15, 2011.
