BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH J. Stanley Brown was born near Cumberland, Ohio on September 13, 1863. At seventeen he became a village school master, a position he held for three years. In 1883 he entered Denison University and after six years graduated with an A.B. degree in classical languages. Brown's several academic positions included: a classics instructor in Kentucky; president of Arlington College (Kentucky); principal of a normal school in Dalles, Oregon; and principal of Joliet Township School. In 1919 Brown accepted the position of president of the Northern Illinois State Normal School. During his administration Brown promoted the use of public relations to boost school spirit and expand programs. He formed the President's Council consisting of five senior (male) professors and the Committee on Athletics to actively involve faculty members in the school's operations. Brown also contributed to the community. He taught Sunday School classes and served as a member of the Board of Education of the Northern Baptist Convention from 1919 to 1935. He frequently spoke out against liquor interests and following the war, traveled to various Illinois cities to speak on labor unrest. J. Stanley Brown offered his resignation in 1927 following a great deal of controversy over his financial dealings and his administrative capabilities.
